Its tax time again.  If it doesn’t conjure up warm and fuzzy feelings, you’re not alone.  While we at Circle K believe in paying taxes to support the American way of life, we know you won’t mind if we take some of the burden off your shoulders. 

For four days, not one single Circle K customer will pay taxes on anything they buy in the store.  From Thursday, April 14^th through Sunday, April 17^th everything in the store is tax free.

Now don’t worry.  We’ll make sure the government wheels keep turning.  We’re really giving you an additional 7% discount to make up for it.  Add that to our already low prices, and you’ve got real tax relief! 

And not a moment too soon.  The income tax filing deadline has been extended to Monday, April 18^th for those of you who take the time to make sure every “I” is dotted and every “T” is crossed (a p.c. way of defining procrastination, but the kettle isn’t gonna call the pot black).

And if you’re watchin’ the mailbox for a refund (woo-hoo for you!), the IRS is telling us you’ll get it 3 weeks from an electronic filing, or 6 to 8 weeks if you used snail mail. 

We’ve got a bunch of suggestions for what you can do with that refund.

Here’s a few holiday tips to make this the best season ever.

1. Make a Connection.  This is the time to reconnect with old friends and relatives who live at a distance and whom you seldom see.  Send a card, an email, or make a call.  It will do wonders for both of you.

2. See the Sights/Lights.  One of the simplest joys is driving through the neighborhoods, taking in the holiday decorations.  Let everyone else do the work.  You just enjoy it.

3. Keep a Song in Your Heart.  If the holidays get you down, some upbeat music will get rid of the blues.  Sing along, and don’t worry about who is listening!

4. It’s Not a Sprint, It’s a Marathon.  Don’t let the holidays put you in overdrive.  You don’t have to do it all.  Make a list, prioritize.  Then spend your time on what is most important and forget the rest.

5. Wash Your Hands.  Of all the things you want to share this holiday season, germs aren’t one of them.  Think defensively, wash your hands often, especially when away from home.

6. Toy Safety.  When choosing toys, check the age appropriateness for the intended child.  Toys too advance may pose safety hazards to younger children.  Despite the 24 hours of “The Christmas Story” movie on cable TV, avoid BB guns…you could put your eye out!

7. Pet Safety.  Get special doggie treats, but don’t share the rich, fatty people food with your pets.  Many of the holiday plants are poisonous, so put the holly, mistletoe, and Poinsettias where Rover can’t reach them.

8. Wait or Buy?  Television sets are a popular item around the holidays, but this year is likely to be a repeat of last year, where the best prices were offered in January.  The word on iPad is it doesn’t matter, now or later.  Toys, now is the time.

9. Wrap with Distinction.  Get creative with your gifts.  Use aluminum foil for a different look.  Cover a paper towel roll with pictures from a magazine.  Use the funny papers.

10. The Tree.  To check for freshness, check the needles.  They will be hard to pull from the branches, and when bent between your fingers, they will not break.  The trunk butt of a fresh tree will be sticky with resin.

We recently ran across a very helpful article from Furniture/Today about how to buy a mattress.  Since they went to all the trouble of interviewing customers and researching, we thought we’d pass along a summary of what they advise.

1.       The best mattress for you is the one that feels the most comfortable.  Wow.  That simplifies things.  But really, everyone is different, so try it out and see how it feels.  And don’t be bashful.  Stretch out, curl up, spend a little time in the store on the mattresses.  (We don’t mind.  Really.)  You’ll be spending lots of time on it once you get it home!

2.      When do you need to replace your mattress?  If you answer yes to any of these questions, it may be time:

a.       Do you sleep better in hotel beds than your bed at home?

b.      Do you wake up tired?

c.       Does your bed show signs of wear?

d.      Is your bed from five to eight years old?

The average sleep set lasts for about 10 years, but not all beds wear out the same, and not all bodies are the same.  Especially if they toss and turn like someone we won’t mention.

3.       What about a warranty?  A warranty is your protection against defective workmanship, not a guarantee of product life or comfort.  Even is your warranty is 10 to 20 years, that doesn’t mean it will provide maximum comfort or support that long.  If you body changes or your life changes, you may need a new bed.

4.      How much do you want to spend?  The moment of truth.  A good sleep set, even one costing thousands of dollars, is a great investment in your health.  You spend $4.26 each day on a Chai latte at Starbucks.  A $1000 sleep set only costs about 27 cents per night.  A $1500 bed is 41 cents, based on 10 years of use.  Our advice:  Buy the best bed you can afford from a retailer you trust…like Circle K!

Handling life’s challenges is hard for anyone. In some ways, even more so for kids. They haven’t had the practice we adults have had. So, Circle K is partnered with Broyhill and the Make-A-Wish foundation to give some very special kids an opportunity for some joy in their lives by granting furniture and room makeover wishes.

The goal is to grant 50 wishes nationwide by providing furniture and cash donations. From July 15th to September 15th, Broyhill will contribute 1% of all sales to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to put toward these wishes.
